Foshan builds international science and innovation community in Danzao to attract global talent

The plan for the Xianhu International Science and Innovation Community was officially launched on Saturday at the Xianhu Laboratory in Danzao Town, Nanhai District, Foshan City.

The initiative aims to establish the area as a leading hub for both domestic and international tech talent within the next three years. By fostering an environment for innovation and the commercialisation of scientific research in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the community is set to become a key driver of the region’s sci-tech ecosystem.

Located in Danzao Town, the Xianhu International Science and Innovation Community covers 1.2 square kilometres around Xianhu Lake and includes a 9-square-kilometre core area, with an additional 40-square-kilometre expansion zone.

The core area is already home to the Xianhu Laboratory, part of the third batch of provincial laboratories in Guangdong Province. The laboratory has assembled a scientific research team of nearly 150 experts, including academicians and national-level talents. It focuses on hydrogen energy and hydrogen-ammonia fusion technology, aiming to play a pivotal role in the Greater Bay Area’s international science and technology innovation centre.

The Xianhu International Science and Innovation Community will centre its efforts on developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Scientists’ Entrepreneurship Park. Spanning 110,000 square metres, the park will introduce specialised technology service and operational teams to create a comprehensive support system for scientists and entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the community will establish the 12,000-square-metre Xianhu Makers’ Headquarters, designed to support early-stage startups by offering policy guidance, financing and investment matchmaking, as well as a rent-for-equity model to ease financial pressures. Leveraging the expansion zone, the community will also provide ample industrial land to facilitate the commercialisation of science and innovation projects.

To further support innovation, Danzao will establish the 500-million-yuan Xianhu Science and Innovation Fund. This fund will introduce an innovative financial service mechanism covering the entire life cycle of sci-tech projects and will integrate resources from municipal and district-level industry investment funds, Guangdong Science and Technology Finance, and private capital.
