Free music camp for kids back at Swan School with multiple levels, genres

By James Robinson

YEA Music is launching its seventh year of free music camp for kids. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Aug. 4 to 8 at the Swan School in Port Townsend.

Registration is now open for students from fourth through 12th grades. Beginners through advanced music students are encouraged to attend. There will be multiple levels of classes and ensembles such as fiddle groups, jazz band, chamber groups and more.

Students will work with high-level local music instructors on their musical development. Beginners attend classes on several instruments including drums, which are provided free of charge.

Camp fees are based on a “pay-what-you-can” model, with a suggested donation of $10 per day, but no one is turned away. Registration can be completed online at the YEA Music website.

YEA Music is a not-for-profit corporation supported by community donations. Instructors include local school music teachers and local professional musicians.

“We are most proud of the great level of talent we are able to provide at this camp,”said Camp Director Daniel Ferland. “Port Townsend and East Jefferson has many very good teachers who are able to provide one on one support to our kids.”

There will be an end of camp performance for families at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug 8.
