Free RAU lecture in Cirencester explores global empire
This event is part of RAU’s 180th anniversary celebrations.
Multi-award-winning historian, William Dalrymple, and British archaeologist, Professor Mark Horton, will take attendees on a global journey, from Madagascar to Virginia, to illustrate the significance of historical archaeology in understanding today’s world.
The lecture is titled Globalisation and Empire; an archaeology, and it will delve into Professor Horton’s 40 years of research.
His work spans the ancient maritime silk road, Eurasian crop and animal dispersion, and the 16th and 17th-century European colonies.
Professor Horton, who also serves as pro vice-chancellor, research and enterprise, and director of research at the RAU, said: “We are going to have a great conversation about how the origins of the modern world were rooted in ancient times, with some amazing new archaeological discoveries.
“William and I have known each other since the early 1980s and, between us, we will be sharing 100 years of research.”
William Dalrymple, known for his works on Indian history, colonialism and empire, said: “Mark and I will be talking all things empire and imperial.
“We will discuss the centrality of India in the formation of the ancient world, and how the influence of India spanned not only the Indian Ocean but also China, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.”
The lecture is open to all and will be held in the university’s Boutflour Hall on Wednesday, June 11, from 6pm to 8pm.
Tickets are free and can be reserved on the RAU’s Eventbrite page.
The RAU, established in 1845 as the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world, is celebrating its 180th anniversary with this lecture series and a calendar of other special events.
These include the unveiling of a new anniversary sculpture, the opening of £5.8m land laboratories, a community open day, and an online global party with international partners.
