From Mumbai to global stage: Mukesh Ambani’s $100 billion vision for India’s entertainment sector

India’s current $28 billion media and entertainment sector could grow fivefold to exceed $100 billion in the next ten years—provided the country makes focused investments in infrastructure, talent, and technology, said Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani during his address at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 today.Laying out his vision for India’s media and entertainment industry, Ambani said that while Mumbai is already the entertainment hub of India, the country now has the potential to become the entertainment hub of the world.

Unlike traditional industries that produce material goods and services with shorter lifespans, Ambani said creative products—films, music, literature, and digital content—resonate with human emotions and offer enduring value that transcends borders, cultures, and generations.

India’s entertainment industry, often described as the country’s soft power, is in fact its true power, Ambani said, adding that culture and art have the power to unite the world in a way nothing else can.

He highlighted India’s unbeatable advantages in three key areas: a rich legacy of storytelling—drawing from ancient epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata; a young and dynamic population with an average age of 29; and a rapidly advancing technology infrastructure, including a smartphone base of 1.2 billion devices.

“India’s media and entertainment industry today stands at $28 billion. We can easily grow this five times to over $100 billion in the next decade. This will give birth to huge new opportunities in employment and entrepreneurship across diverse fields,” Ambani said.To realise this potential, he urged investments in state-of-the-art content clusters across the country and noted the need to train tens of thousands of young talents in animation, VFX, and related technologies.“India should incentivise IP creation, AI-powered innovation, and gamification. The country should open new investment avenues for this industry and create an enabling, encouraging, and empowering regulatory environment that rewards imagination and inclusion,” he added.

Ambani also stressed the importance of thinking globally, stating that the best of India’s content creators should start viewing the world as their market and develop content for international audiences.

“We should nurture even our regional creators to go global. Decades ago, when technology was not advanced, Raj Kapoor and other doyens of Indian cinema made films that became immensely popular in Russia, China, Central America, and elsewhere,” he noted.
