Klaipeda, Lithuania: A hundred years ago, Indian-made goods used to stream into this port town, one of the largest in the Baltics. It was mostly textiles and spices — pepper, cinnamon and cardamom. Today, a century later, Klaipeda is looking for investment to make itself bigger, better and also greener. It is looking towards India and a firm like the Adanis. And towards linking up with the Indian government, inspired India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor.

While India and Lithuania are thousands of miles away from each other, there are links, said Algis Latakas, director general, Klaipeda State Seaport Authority (KSSA). “We want better relations with India. We are keen to increase our capacity and we are looking to attract Indian shipping lines. And are looking at reclaiming about 100 hectares of land. We know the Adanis are very active. They are working on hydrogen. It is a good time to find out what we can do together and we want to sit down and discuss what we can do with the Adanis. Latakas said his firm has good relations with Mumbai port and the Jawharlal Nehru port. So, if we can work with the Adanis, it will be good.”

The Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) are keen on being part of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor or IMEEC, that was accepted during the G20 meeting in Delhi. The corridor, a strategic opportunity, will be important, said Latakas as everyone realises how important India is an how important India will become. “The corridor will begin in India, go through the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and end in Europe. We with our sisters, Latvia and Estonia, can be at the end of the corridor. We are in a very good location, geographically speaking. We are well suited for Northern Europe.”

Even now, containers come in from india and the products are distributed all over these areas. “ It will be suitable for business,” he added. One of the biggest ports in the area, it’s cargo volume is annually over 35 million tons and attracts about 5,500 ships annually, with over 4 lakh passengers coming in, including those on cruise ships.
