FRU Eyes Land for Sports Infrastructure
“We can’t hold our provincial games and Vanua Cup and Ranadi because of the limitations on the grounds. We now have to then take that on ourselves and see where we can discuss and have lands made available so we can develop our grounds.

Talks are underway between Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and some landowners on the possibility of leasing land for sports infrastructure.
FRU board chairman John Sanday confirmed that this was discussed briefly at last Saturday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Novotel Suva Lami Bay.
He said this was an ongoing challenge regarding the hosting of domestic competitions during the rugby season.
“The availability of good accredited and proper sized grounds is the biggest concern,” Sanday said.
“We can’t hold our provincial games and Vanua Cup and Ranadi because of the limitations on the grounds. We now have to then take that on ourselves and see where we can discuss and have lands made available so we can develop our grounds.
“If you look at our demographic, 99 per cent of our people are landowners or members of landowning unit. We are working with some, to unlock some of the lands that we can then take on for long term lease and then developing infrastructure.”
Sanday added they would also include development centres, where they could bring in high performance rugby academies particularly in the West and in the Northern divisions.
He indicated micro centres would also be added to major centre in strategic areas.
“It’s the start of a long journey, and of course, there’s going to be financing issues in there. We have to see how we’re going to finance that.”
Symposium
Sanday indicated that also discussed at the AGM is a rugby symposium, which will be from August 25-30.
The five-day event will see regional and international speakers.
“It’ll be all week; then Saturday we play Tonga,” Sanday said.
“We’re going to be having speakers and discussions and on several important topics. The learnings and findings from those discussions, we will then take on board and compiled to build our strategic plan for the next 10 years,” he added.
Sanday indicated that FRU has a lot of work going on behind the scenes.
“We’re not being seen a lot, but the results are coming through now on the field, the profit, the cleanup of the accounts, going into tier one, then we got test matches next year. I think it’s all coming together well.
“I can only encourage everyone to just continue to support. Let’s not criticise destructively, let’s criticise constructively. We will be the first one to accept any constructive comments and criticism,” he added.
