The Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India revealed that trials are being done with isobutanol blended with diesel and that tractors powered by electricity are already showing lower running costs, which could help farmers save money and reduce pollution at the same time. The Union Minister also urged the industry to set up vehicle scrapping units, which would reduce waste and create new business opportunities.
India spends a massive Rs 22 lakh crore every year on importing fuels, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says this must change. Speaking at the 7th Auto Retail Conclave of FADA, Gadkari strongly pushed for the use of biofuels, hydrogen, electric mobility, ethanol, and even methanol to reduce this dependence and strengthen the Indian economy.
“We have an import of 22 lakh crores. Is it not appropriate that we have to make in India with our own strength? And with our own capabilities, there should be no import. We can stand on our own strength. So we are working on that. We want to concentrate on alternative fuel, biofuel, hydrogen, electric, whatever the choice may be, even in the marine engine. Now we are planning to use methanol,” Gadkari said.
The Indian Auto Industry contributes Rs 20 lakh crore to India’s economy, makes up 15% of GST collections, and provides jobs to over 3 crore people.
Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors talked about SIAM’s green initiatives like Vidyutikaran (for EV growth), Javik Pahal (for biofuels), and Gas Gati Shilta (for CNG/LNG adoption), along with hydrogen trials. He stressed that the future of India’s auto industry depends on collaboration between manufacturers (OEMs) and dealers, especially to support India’s big shift towards greener mobility and decarbonization goals. He also welcomed the government’s recent GST cuts, saying they will boost sales during the festive season.
For auto enthusiasts, this means we could soon see more electric tractors, biofuel-powered vehicles, and hydrogen-based transport in India, which will be cheaper for users, cleaner for the environment, and better for the economy.
