In a move set to transform urban commuting in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the Maharashtra Ports Department has been asked to speed up preparations for launching a new water taxi service connecting the Gateway of India to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane held a review meeting on Monday at Mantralaya, directing officials to chalk out detailed planning and submit proposals for building jetties wherever required. The aim is to reduce road traffic congestion and provide a faster, cleaner, and more efficient way to travel between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary of Transport and Ports Department Sanjay Sethi, Navi Mumbai Airport Authority representative Brijesh Singhal, and Maharashtra Maritime Board’s Pradeep Badiye were present during the meeting. Minister Rane stressed that the terminal development should begin in phases and that the airport authority should initiate proposals for necessary permissions. He also instructed the identification of key locations for setting up cargo jetties in the future.
The proposed water taxi service is expected to cut travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just around 40 minutes. Importantly, the initiative plans to use electric boats, which will not only reduce pollution but also promote eco-friendly urban transport.
This project marks a significant step by the state government towards strengthening water-based transport infrastructure in and around Mumbai. As road traffic continues to increase, such sustainable alternatives could offer commuters a more comfortable and faster option.
Once operational, this water taxi route will enhance connectivity between Mumbai and key locations in Navi Mumbai, including the upcoming international airport. This move is also aligned with the state’s vision of modernising transport networks while caring for the environment.
The water taxi service is expected to bring relief to thousands of daily commuters and will also boost tourism by offering a scenic and speedy travel alternative. With planning and execution now on the fast track, Mumbai may soon witness a game-changing shift in how people move across the city and its growing suburbs.
