George Clooney Explains Why He’s Done Making Romantic Movies
George Clooney is arguably one of the most popular leading men in Hollywood. However, the actor says he no longer has much interest in the romance genre.
“Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men,” Clooney told 60 Minutes. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore,” he added. The actor is currently preparing for his Broadway debut in the upcoming production of Good Night, and Good Luck. The stage play is adapted from the 2005 film of the same name which starred David Strathairn as the newsman.

The newly announced Ocean’s sequel indicates Warner Bros. renewed interest in the franchise.
Clooney, who appeared in the movie as Fred Friendly, co-wrote the play with Grant Heslov. When asked if he wished he had made the move to Broadway sooner, the actor was candid with his response. “I don’t know that I could have. I didn’t do the work required to get there,” he explained. “There isn’t a single actor alive that wouldn’t have loved to have, you know, been on Broadway. So that’s the fun of it. It’s trickier the older you get. But why not?” he continued.
Clooney began his acting career in the late 1970s with a few small roles in film and television. It wasn’t until he was cast as Dr. Doug Ross in the hit NBC medical drama ER that his popularity really began to soar. He went on to star in several movies in the romance genre such as One Fine day opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Intolerable Cruelty alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones. Since then, the actor has gravitated toward roles in almost every other genre.

The actor’s next big project is the upcoming coming-of-age comedy-drama Jay Kelly. The movie is directed by Noah Baumbach, who co-wrote the script for 2023’s Barbie with his wife, Greta Gerwig. Although plot details are scarce, the project is described as a “new, heartbreaking comedy.” It also features a star-studded cast alongside Clooney, including Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Jim Broadbent, Jamie Demetriou, Isla Fisher, Eve Hewson, Stacy Keach, and Emily Mortimer.
