Georgian Agriculture Minister, World Bank official review irrigation development, sustainable land management strategies

David Songulashvili, the Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Georgia, and Holger Kray, the World Bank’s Agriculture and Food Sector Manager for Europe and Central Asia, on Tuesday discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in irrigation development and sustainable land management.

The Ministry of Agriculture said the meeting highlighted the importance of advancing climate-smart agriculture by improving farmers’ access to modern technologies and equipment.

Songulashvili emphasised the World Bank’s ongoing support for  implementation of Georgia’s Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy and its accompanying action plan.

With the support of the World Bank, several key projects are ongoing in Georgia that contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture. We follow the Strategy and its action plan, and the involvement of the World Bank in this process, particularly in terms of accessing new technologies, is important”, the Minister said.

In response, Kray thanked Songulashvili for the “fruitful cooperation” and reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to implementing new projects in the region.

The integration of environmental protection with agricultural development in a single ministry makes the implementation of climate-smart agriculture projects in Georgia more effective”, he said.

The Ministry noted the country had been implementing the Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation and Land Project with World Bank support. The project, with a total investment of $150 million, aims to enhance irrigation and drainage services for farmers, improve agricultural production, and strengthen the institutional capacities for national irrigation and land management.
