New Delhi: A German tourist took to social media to share his experience of using India’s metro system. The man said he was pleased with the experience. He also compared the country’s metro to those abroad and said it might even be better than a few countries in Western Europe.

In his post, Alex Welder told users that he had a different idea of India’s public transport before visiting the country. “Before coming to India, the stereotypes about public transport in the country were demolished or old buses and trains and noisy tuk-tuks and rickshaws,” said Welder. Further, he stated that he was unaware of the metro systems in Delhi and Agra. He went on to compare the Delhi metro to that he had observed in South Korea, Japan, and China.

He added, “I stayed in South Delhi and I was also pleasantly surprised that I got a place to sit 80-90% of the time, as long as I didn’t ride the metros at rush hour and stayed away from the city center and tourist hotspots.”  He also praised the availability of food and shopping spots at metros. The video shared by the German tourist garnered the attention of many people.

Many spoke of how the western stereotypes were tarnishing the image of the country and its infrastructure. Another stated that the Delhi metro was better than the London tube. Others actively joined the discussion and claimed that while India had its flaws, it deserved appreciation in various things.

“There are a lot of things in India that are better than the West. Public transport, and no, not all of them are dirty…..access to private healthcare, access to maids, cooks, babysitters, elderly care, quick and timely deliveries for almost anything. Yes, India has a lot of issues it needs to work on, but it has done great in some areas,” said one.
