Germany’s Theater Erfurt Appoints New General Music Director
Conductor Hermes Helfricht will assume the role from July 2025 to July 2027
After a long search to fill the role, Theater Erfurt has now welcomed the 33-year-old German conductor Hermes Helfricht as its new General Music Director.
In addition to this role, he will also begin his position as Chief Conductor of the Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen from the 2025/26 season after mutual agreement.
Selected unanimously from two other candidates, Helfricht will soon lead all concert operations and will be the musical director of the theater. He is set to make his debut at the DomStufen Festival in the summer with two performances of Puccini’s La Bohème.
Hailing from Saxony, Helfricht is a graduate of the University of the Arts in Berlin, where he studied orchestral conducting and was a pianist in the chamber music class of the Artemis Quartet. In the 2015/16 season, he served as Second Kapellmeister in Erfurt.
Alongside his current work with Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, he has performed with ensembles including the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
