Girls in STEM Academy hosts fun event to inspire girls in science careers – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Girls in STEM Academy will host STEM Fest this Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its new campus on the north side of central Indiana. The event aims to engage families with fun activities and promote STEM education, especially for girls.

Principal Chrystal Westerhaus emphasized the significance of closing the gender gap in STEM fields, noting that the academy is tailored to encourage girls to pursue careers in these areas.

“We love girls and STEM, but also this festival is about exposing families just to STEM education in general,” Westerhaus said. “Research says that STEM careers are the careers of the future, and we want to make sure that it’s equitable and that we’re closing that gap for girls,” Westerhaus added.

The event will feature various vendors from the community, including the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, which is the academy’s biggest partner. Activities will include STEM-related fun, bounce houses, food, and music, providing an engaging environment for families to learn and enjoy.

Girls in STEM Academy is a new school that is expanding to seventh grade this year and is partnering with Purdue Polytechnic High School to provide pathways to STEM opportunities.

The academy’s curriculum is developed in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, focusing on state standards and the interests of its students.

STEM Fest at Girls in STEM Academy offers a unique opportunity for families to explore STEM education in a fun and interactive way, helping to inspire the next generation of female scientists and engineers.
