GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturing firm headquartered in New York, US, will establish a fab-less centre for design and testing in India. The centre will be located at the Kolkata Power Centre with potential plans for future fabrication expansion.

On Wednesday (June 4), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with Kathy Giles-Diaz, Consul General at the US Consulate General in Kolkata. Following the meeting, the West Bengal Government announced it would allocate GlobalFoundries space in the Software Technology Park of India for their operations.

“We discussed our shared commitment to deepening US-India ties and explored emerging opportunities for collaboration in the fields of technology, innovation, and education,” Chief Minister Banerjee said after meeting with Giles-Diaz. “We have already facilitated their operations by allotting 1207.74 sqm of space at the Software Technology Parks of India IT Park in Sector-5 at Salt Lake. An additional 1765.16 sqm has been requested, and the process is underway.”

The fab site near Kalyani-Barrackpore Expressway will include a cleanroom facility, chip packaging line, and design-test labs.

The facility is anticipated to concentrate on the highly sought-after 28nm–14nm nodes for electric vehicles, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence. India’s semiconductor initiative has been instrumental in establishing the fabrication plant in this region. More than 20,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities will be generated in Bengal’s developing ‘Silicon Corridor’.

Banerjee also noted that the American semiconductor company Santech Global has expressed interest in establishing a major project in Kolkata.

GlobalFoundries recently announced it will invest $16bn domestically to expand US production.
