GO issued on merger of 22 villages with Tiruchi Corporation

Twenty-two village panchayats have been provisionally merged with Tiruchi Corporation, expanding the limits of the urban civic body.

A government order to that effect was issued on Tuesday by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department. The order was issued based on the recommendation made by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, who acted on a survey by the Department of Rural Development and Tiruchi Corporation to identify the urbanised suburbs.

As per the GO, Malliampathu, Kambarasampettai, Maruthandakurichi, Mutharasanallur, Athavathur, Allithurai, K. Kallikudi, Kumaravayalur, Nachikurichi, Punganur, Somarasampettai, Gundur, Keelakurichi, Kumbakudi (Ward 3 to Ward 6), Navalpattu (Ward 4 to Ward 15), Appadurai, Thalakudi, Valadi, Nerunjalakudi, Koothur, Madhavaperumalkoil and Bikshandarkovil villages in Andhanallur, Manachanallur, Manikandam, Lalgudi, and Tiruverumbur blocks have been merged with the Corporation.

According to official sources, wards will be divided by taking into account of the newly merged areas for the next election. People, who reside in the respective areas, can submit their objections, if any, to the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Chennai. The objections should be submitted within six weeks from the date of notification on the merger in the Tamil Nadu Gazette.

The current term of rural local bodies comes to an on Sunday. It is expected that the officials of the rural local bodies would formally hand over the registers, population details, and other documents of their respective villages to the Corporation.

It was in 2011 that the Tiruchi Corporation jurisdiction was expanded with the merger of Tiruverumbur town panchayat, Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keezha Kalkandarkottai, and Alathur village panchayats, The geographical spread of the Corporation increased to 167.23 sq. km. from 146.90 sq. km. With the further merger of rural local bodies spreading across 120 sq. km., the geographical spread of the city will expand to about 287.23 sq. km. After the completion of delimitation process, the number of wards is expected to increase to 100 from 65.
