Governor Abbott Announces Canyon as Film Friendly Community

Canyon is about to get a little more Hollywood, or at least the backdrop for some really great movies and TV shows.

On Thursday, February 27th, Governor Greg Abbott designated Canyon, Texas as a Film Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Film Commission.  Canyon completed an extensive training and certification process to obtain this distinction.

To receive this destination, representatives from Canyon had to attend workshops on how to become a Film Friendly Certified Community.  The city had to pass filming guidelines that will benefit the residents of Canyon and those in the film industry. At least 5 filming locations and photos had to be submitted to the Texas Film Commission database.

“Congratulations to Canyon on earning the Film Friendly Texas designation and joining more than 175 other Texas communities that have received this recognition,” said Governor Abbott.

Canyon is now a part of 175 Texas communities who also hold this designation.  This includes Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, and Fritch.  Thanks to now having this designation, this means more job creation in Canyon through media production.

This is just another step for Texas becoming the film capital of the world.

Don’t be surprised if you see more TV and movies being filmed in Canyon.  If you think about it, Canyon has the perfect backdrop with Palo Duro Canyon, and if you have ever been on the square, it would be perfect for a small town-based movie or TV show, not to mention West Texas A&M University would be a perfect film location.  Picture this: Night at the Museum Panhandle style.

Big things are coming to Canyon, Texas!  We can’t wait.
