Gov’t, World Bank Launch Scholarships to Boost Agriculture Sector

The government,
in collaboration with the World Bank, has announced a fully funded scholarship
programme aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ agricultural sector. The
initiative, launched under the Transforming Fisheries Management in
Southwest Indian Ocean Region and Maldives
project, will provide ten
scholarships for students enrolling in the Diploma in Agricultural Science at
the Maldives National University (MNU).

According to the
Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the scholarships are designed to
cultivate specialised expertise in agricultural science and expand the pool of
trained professionals in the country. Officials stressed that enhancing human
resources in agriculture is vital to improving domestic food production and
reducing dependence on food imports, a persistent challenge for the Maldives.

Applications are
now open and will be accepted until 18 September through the Project Management
Unit of the Fisheries Ministry. Applicants may also submit their applications
electronically via email.

The scholarship
package covers full tuition fees and offers additional support for students,
especially those residing in atolls outside Malé. Recipients enrolled in the
blended learning programme will receive round-trip airfare, a travel allowance,
and a monthly stipend throughout the duration of their studies.

The initiative
marks a significant step in aligning government efforts with long-term
strategies to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agricultural
practices in the Maldives.
