Hachiko Efficiency Services has been honoured with two prestigious awards by the International Trade Council (

The awards are:

• Global Carbon Neutral Exporter of the Year

• Global Recognition Award for Innovation Driving Sustainable Industry Change

These accolades recognize Hachiko’s exceptional commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency, and transformative innovation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Operating across Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Hachiko Efficiency Services has consistently set new benchmarks in environmental stewardship and environmental compliance.

The awards acknowledge the company’s pioneering role in reducing carbon emissions, advancing clean technologies, and developing sustainable practices that are reshaping global industry standards.

The International Trade Council, a globally recognized body operating in 179 Countries, grants these awards annually to companies demonstrating outstanding performance, sustainability leadership, and innovative contributions to global trade and industry.

Hachiko is partially owned by MRL Capital (Lihir) and operates from the Lae Inland Logistics location at 10 Mangola St Lae.

Post Courier Online reached out to Hachiko Director, Dr Lloyd Fergestad, on what the awards mean for the business in its multiple jurisdictions, but more so in its PNG operation.

“We are operating in several areas and to be nominated by the managing authorities in these areas means a lot as we value the partnerships which we have formed since we began this process in 2018

“There has been a lot of information shared about waste oil management, international regulations and potential liability for managing things incorrectly.

“Significant awareness has been developed in PNG over the issues, particularly around liability of hazardous waste and how it is managed both domestically and offshore

Asked to clarify on the bigger picture working with domestic authorities in the environment protection space, Fergestad indicated the expertise and validation the awards bring is a testament in its efforts to build systems in place to assist CEPA address the huge issue of waste oil in the country that has not been in the forefront of discussions and the public considering the millions upon millions of oil products that enter the PNG market.

“Hachiko has been actively working with CEPA (Conservation and Environment Protection Authority) and other ministries since 2018 in the development of a waste oil management program.

“For a lot of people, hazardous waste is simply a revenue stream without liability while it is unregulated but CEPA have done a lot of work in this space and now have their own management system in place which is very encouraging.

“Shipping under Basel Convention has allowed us to utilise off take agreements with large refineries in the ASEAN region and ensure maximum recycling of hazardous material as opposed to incineration, or relending toward fuel oil which violates the Marpol agreement as well as continues to contribute significant domestic emissions which in turn dilute PNG’s carbon neutral or negative status.

“This profits the operators at the cost to the PNG state and people.

“Hachiko would like to thank MRL Capital (Lihir) for their ongoing support as well as Lae Inland Logistics for their valued assistance while establishing our depot and all of the staff at CEPA and PNG Treasury for their ongoing guidance,” Mr Fergestad added.

The awards will be presented in November in London, by Sven Jürgenson Former Head United Nations Security Council, Former Ambassador of Estonia to the United Nations, Former Chairman UNICEF Board, Board Member International Centre for Trade Transparency.
