Haley Barvels named next head coach of Spruins hockey team – InForum
FARGO — A familiar face will lead the Fargo North/South girls hockey team next season.
Haley Barvels has been hired as the Spruins’ next head coach, the co-op program announced Monday.
The Fargo North alum previously served as an assistant for North/South for the past five seasons, helping guide the team to three consecutive state championships from 2022-24 in the process.
Barvels takes the reins from former coach Parker Metz, who
accepted the head coaching gig for the West Fargo boys hockey program in May
.
“I am honored to formally accept the position of Head Coach for the Fargo North/South Girls Hockey program,” Barvels said in a news release. “This is an incredible opportunity, and I’m particularly excited about the potential for continued growth and development. I look forward to building upon the strong foundation already in place.”
Barvels graduated from North High in 2011 and also played for the standalone North girls program, winning three state titles in 2008, 2009 and 2011 during her five-year varsity career.
Barvels went on to play collegiate hockey at NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Superior, where she was a four-year letterwinner for the Yellowjackets. The forward earned her bachelor’s degree in science and community health in 2015.
Prior to her assistant role with the Spruins, Barvels coached at the 15U level in Moorhead and was also an assistant for the Spuds’ girls varsity program.
“Haley has been a vital part of the North/South Girls Hockey program for years,” Fargo North activities coordinator Dan Shultis said in the release. “Her leadership, character, and passion for the game are unmatched. We’re thrilled to see her step into this well-deserved role and begin a new chapter leading the program.”
Barvels stated she’s excited to hit the ground running.
“I’m fully committed to leading this team with dedication and passion,” Barvels said in the release. “My vision is to continue building a program that emphasizes hard work, respect, and team unity. I’m confident that with the support of our athletes, families, and community, we can achieve great things together.”
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
