Harry Potter Star Muses over the TV Show ‘Supplanting’ the Movies

Lucius Malfoy is (arguably) Jason Isaacs’ most iconic role to date; it’s bittersweet to think he’s going to be replaced. Despite the update, Isaacs has faith in the Harry Potter TV series and its definitive adaptation of the novels.

Jason Isaacs is letting go of Lucius Malfoy, now that the role is being recast for the Harry Potter series. Fans identified Isaacs as the character for so long, he said it’s bittersweet to think he’s being replaced. “It’s peculiar… It’s the first time it happened,” he told Collider. “I don’t know what it’s like. I’m relatively sanguine about things I have no choice over. No point resenting things that are happening, or regretting things. And so, it is what it is.” Isaacs’ impressive career spans more than three decades, but the Harry Potter films gained him a cult following; he’s confident the new adaptation will be great.

The actor got very real about the magical part of the films.

It’s going to be brilliant,” he asserted, referring to the upcoming show. “I’ve been Lucius Malfoy for a long time. I guess I won’t be Lucius Malfoy for the next generation. I could be upset about that if I chose to, but I’m trying to choose not to.” Warner Bros. confirmed plans for the TV adaptation in April 2023, but details about development were scarce until the March 2025 casting announcement. There’s no word yet as to who would play Lucius Malfoy, but Isaacs has aired his thoughts on any rumors or updates. “I wouldn’t have any advice at all. Why would I bother?” he told Variety. “It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me.”

Jason Isaacs Reflects On Being ‘Erased’ From Harry Potter History

Reflecting on the industry and its uncertainties, he said it helps to put things into perspective. “Your contemporaries are on the sides of buses or suddenly have unheard of unimaginable amounts of money,” he added. “The fact that there’s another Harry Potter will supplant us, and we will — possibly — even be erased from history. It’s just what it is.” Isaacs initially auditioned to play Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter movies, but that role went to Kenneth Branagh; Isaacs was cast after producers suggested he read Lucius Malfoy’s script.

The actor also made several comparisons between his Harry Potter and The White Lotus characters.

“The series will be phenomenal because it’s [producer] David Heyman, and it’s [director] Mark Mylod.” Isaacs asserted. He’s also prepared to see a more book-accurate depiction of Lucius Malfoy in the series premiere. “Since I came up with the whole look for him, which isn’t in the book, I’m imagining they won’t use any of the things like the long blond wig or the capes and the cane and all that stuff,” he quipped.

Lucius Malfoy would have looked very different in the Harry Potter movies if Isaacs hadn’t insisted they change it. The TV show might revert to the original concept, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Isaacs’ version is now iconic.

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter TV series currently does not have a release date.
