HEALTH – WHO says it is optimistically following the development of Russian cancer vaccines
Batyr Berdyklychev, director of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Russia, said that the WHO is following the development of Russian cancer vaccines with great optimism and welcomes the results already achieved.
In an interview with TASS published on Saturday, Berdyklyshev said the WHO is closely monitoring developments in this area, particularly following reports of the launch of work on vaccines to treat and prevent cancer, including personalized vaccines.
He clarified:
« These are very interesting avenues of research, and of course, the World Health Organization welcomes any progress and work in this area. »
The UN official stressed that vaccine development requires significant investment, as well as advanced research infrastructure, which can take decades to build, in addition to cutting-edge technologies.
He added :
« Russia is one of the few countries with all these capabilities. »
Earlier this year, Russian health authorities announced the completion of preclinical trials of a personalized cancer vaccine.
Alexander Ginsburg, director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that preclinical studies of the vaccine have shown that it inhibits tumor growth.
He added that the first participants in clinical trials could be patients with melanoma or small cell lung cancer.
Russian scientists are also considering developing models for other types of cancer, in order to create messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines against kidney, breast, and pancreatic cancer.
