Heavy rains cause devastating humanitarian impact in Nyirol County, commissioner says – The City Review South Sudan
Nyirol County of Jonglei State is facing a severe health crisis as devastating floods have cut off access to vital medical supplies. Rising water levels have inundated roads, making it nearly impossible to transport essential medicine and equipment to healthcare facilities in the area.
James Bol Makuei, Nyirol county commissioner said there is a surge in waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and malaria, exacerbated by poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.
Makuei said the most affected areas include Pading, Pulturuk, and Nyaboor.
He stated that malnutrition rates are also rising, particularly among children and the elderly.
The Commissioner stated that there are many snake bite being reported from most of the payams in the County.
“This has affected a large part of the in Nyirol County. And it is very difficult for them to reach Lankien. They are really suffering from the threat of wild animals, including snake bites and from water born diseases,” said Makuei.
The effect has also spiraled to agriculture, where crops have been destroyed by the flooding water.
“UNICEF always supply medicine in the area every quarter. But due to the heavy rains that has damaged the roads across Nyirol county, this has proved difficult,” he said.
He called on the government and partners to see other means of supplying medical supplies to rescue the local population in the area.
The scale of the flooding and the remoteness of many communities are posing significant logistical challenges in Jonglei state.
The health crisis is unfolding against a backdrop of existing vulnerabilities in Nyirol County, with the people already struggling with the effects of conflict and poverty.
The floods have further strained already limited resources and infrastructure, pushing the local population to the brink.
