Helsinki Airport named world’s 7th best by Travel + Leisure readers

Helsinki Airport has been ranked seventh-best in the world in a new list published by Travel + Leisure, marking its first appearance in the magazine’s annual reader survey.

The Finnish capital’s airport was the only European hub to make the top ten. Around 180,000 readers participated in the survey, rating airports on factors such as accessibility, passenger experience, dining, and design.

Ulla Serlenius, director at airport operator Finavia, said the ranking reflects the airport’s long-term focus on quality.

“Helsinki Airport has maintained its strong position among the best airports in the world, which increases Finland’s attractiveness as a destination,” Serlenius said in a company statement.

The ranking follows a decade of renovation at the airport, completed in recent years. One of the key changes included integrating all key passenger functions, check-in, security, and baggage claim, into a single terminal.

The top spot went to Istanbul Airport, followed by Singapore’s Changi Airport and Hamad International Airport in Qatar. Other airports in the top ten included major hubs in the UAE, Hong Kong, Japan, India, and South Korea.

Helsinki’s appearance on the list places it ahead of globally recognised airports such as Tokyo’s Haneda and Seoul’s Incheon.

Serlenius said that the results demonstrate consistent passenger satisfaction across several areas of service.

“Airports are evaluated on the basis of factors such as accessibility, smooth passenger processes, restaurants, shops and design. The final placement is determined by an average of these evaluations,” she said.

The survey’s results reflect traveller experiences over the past year and are based entirely on reader feedback, according to Travel + Leisure.
