Hickory To Host Festival On The Field, Sails Original Music Series Blues Concert, Sept. 20
Hickory – The City of Hickory will welcome back nationally renowned bluesman Selwyn Birchwood as part of the Sails Original Music Series.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, the community is invited to the Samuel William Davis Sr. Multipurpose Field in Taft Broome Park for a special Festival on the Field starting at 5 p.m., followed by a free Sails Original Music Series concert at 6 p.m. Selwyn Birchwood will hit the stage to perform his greatest blues hits. The Festival on the Field will feature vendor booths, on-site food trucks, and cornhole games.
“Selwyn calls his style of music ‘Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues.’ He’s a unique and powerful writer and blues guitarist playing and singing with his signature power and room-filling charisma. Let’s welcome him back to Hickory,” says Bob Sinclair, coordinator for the Sails Original Music Series.
Although award-winning Florida musician Selwyn Birchwood is firmly rooted in the tradition, the young guitarist, lap steel player, songwriter, and vocalist sets a course for the future of the blues with his visionary, original music. Birchwood, whose band features the pulsating interplay of his blistering guitar with Regi Oliver’s driving baritone sax, deploys a singular sound and style all his own.
His unique version of blues music is an intoxicating mix of deep blues, psychedelic-tinged rock, booty-shaking funk, and sweet Southern soul, played and sung with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a revival tent preacher with a hellhound on his trail. Asked what fans can expect when they see him, Birchwood replies, “My goal is to be sure you cannot listen passively. We’re going to make you dance, and we’re going to make you think.”
Samuel William Davis Sr. Multipurpose Field (730 Third St. SW) sits on the corner of Seventh Avenue SW and Third Street SW in Hickory, across from Brown Penn Recreation Center. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the festival and musical entertainment on the ballfield.
Started in 2012, the City of Hickory’s Sails Original Music Series showcases well-crafted, live music by bringing original music artists to Hickory. Original music is defined as music that is written or composed by the artist who performs it.
The Sails Original Music Series offers excellent musical entertainment from national and international touring acts with the help of numerous sponsors. Thanks to presenting sponsor Protection Products, Inc., and supporting sponsors Atriax, Bob Sinclair Music, Larry’s Music & Sound, Pfahlert Creative Labs, Olde Hickory Brewery, and Crowne Plaza for supporting the series.
The Sails Original Music Series concludes this year on Union Square with New Translations on Friday, Sept. 26.
