Himachal weather update: Orange & yellow alerts for 5 days, IMD warns tourists and locals to stay cautious

Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: “Rainfall will continue over the next five to six days, with heavy spells in between,” said IMD scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma while speaking to ANI, and with that, the hill state of Himachal Pradesh has officially stepped into another spell of wet and unpredictable weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for parts of the state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 29 to August 3, especially in mid-hill and low-lying areas.

Himachal Pradesh Weather

Over the past 24 hours, several regions in the state witnessed light to moderate rainfall, with Kangra district hit hardest, recording a whopping 140 mm of rain at Kangra station, followed by Palampur. Other places like Mandi, Shimla, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kullu, and Chamba also received light showers.

Senior IMD Scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma from the Shimla centre told ANI that the current weather activity is expected to intensify from July 31, especially in districts like Kullu, Kangra, and Mandi, which are already under an orange alert for July 29.

While no flash flood warning has been issued yet, IMD officials are closely watching rain patterns. For now, the rain is still considered moderate, but people living in landslide-prone and flood-sensitive areas are being urged to stay alert.

Rain Deficit Still a Concern

Despite the current showers, Himachal is facing a 10% rainfall deficit for the month of July. Districts like Chamba, Solan, Kangra, and Lahaul-Spiti have recorded below-normal rain, while the rest of the state is mostly in the normal range.

The good news? Temperatures are holding steady around normal levels, providing some relief amid the soggy weather.

IMD’s Advice for Locals and Tourists

The IMD has urged both residents and tourists in the affected areas to remain cautious over the next few days. Travellers, especially those heading to popular tourist spots, should check local weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours.

So if you’re in Himachal, keep your umbrellas close, avoid risky areas, and let the mountains stay beautiful and safe during this active monsoon spell.
