Historic College Football Program Loses Multiple Athletes in Hours After Head Coach Quits
Woah! Now that’s what you call the domino effect. Tough times roll in the Bowling Green Falcons squad. The 2024 season had been not a great one for the Falcons. After all, they came with 7 wins and 6 losses and finished fourth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). But the real pain started now when the East Division runners lost their head coach Scot Loeffler. Despite that being a big blow, the departure was not limited to Loeffler. As soon as he parted ways, two players had hit the exit door. That too within a span of hours. Coincidence? Not much.
Now, six seasons is a lot of time. Coach Loeffler had cut ties with the college football program to make that giant leap into the NFL. And he has succeeded. He’ll be filling the quarterback coaching position in the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Loeffler did have a strong impact on the Bowling Green. Under his tutelage, the college football program had a 27-41 record. But at the same time, he led them to back-to-back winning seasons in 2023-24 and three straight bowl games. Maybe, that’s why the players can’t rely on the program when Loeffler would not be there? Two of them had already swapped wagons – defensive lineman Marcus Moore Jr. and safety Tracy Revels.

Moore had joined Bowling Green as a junior for the spring semester of 2025. Before that, he had spent two seasons at Akron Zips. Now will this move be a big loss? Well, the 6’2” and 310-pounder did appear for 19 career games for the Zips, including all 12 in 2024. His strong resume shows him having eight starts in 2024 for the Zips, dealing 31 tackles. What about the other player who walked on his commitment post-Loeffler’s departure?
As Revels hits the transfer portal, the Bowling Green fans might be going into a panic mode. After all, they might have been having some aspirations from the sophomore safety. He had appeared in 12 of Bowling Green’s games with seven starts. Plus, he totaled 40 tackles and a pass breakup on the season. As a safety, he no doubt provided the Falcons with a sense of safety, but now that’s history. While the Falcons are losing out their players one by one, a national search for Loeffler’s replacement has hit the tracks.

Who can fill Scot Loeffler’s shoes at Bowling Green?
The Bowling Green athletic director Derek van der Merwe will still take some time to be over this loss. He stated, “In these last six seasons, Scot built a very successful program in a challenging climate in collegiate sports.” But bad luck! As the Eagles promoted Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator, Loeffler was hired to fill the spot. Now what made them go for him as the QB coach? Well, that man has some serious talent in developing NFL-worthy QB products.
The list is pretty long. It makes it a total of 8 quarterbacks who grew under Loeffler’s guidance and who combined have won 10 Super Bowl championships. These include – Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, Brian Griese, Chad Henne, Drew Henson, John Navarre, Logan Thomas and Anthony Brown. Before going to the Philadelphia Eagles, Loeffler had also spent a year coaching the quarterbacks for the Detroit Lions. Now who can take over the role?

Among coaches already on BGSU’s staff, Sammy Lawanson and Steve Morrison stand out. After all, the duo helped Bowling Green to rank in the top four in MAC when it came to their defense game. Scot Loeffler’s boys allowed 21.6 points per game in scoring defense and 333.3 yards in total defense in 2024. Beyond Bowling Green, the Navy defensive pass game coordinator Eric Lewis too comes off as a good option. He carries some Falcons experience having been a defensive coordinator and secondary coach there. No matter which way they go, they’ve got to fill Scot Loeffler’s shoes fast if they want to keep the exodus under control.
