Holmes bicentennial bash set for June 7-8 in Berlin and Millersburg

Bicentennial festivities end with concert and historical exhibits, video, plays

Two days of celebrating 200 years of Holmes County will take place over the weekend of June 7-8.

The Willie Green Band will come back to life thanks to the American Musical Production Company. A 24-piece band will recreate the music from concerts from 1929 and 1939 to close out the Holmes County Bicentennial celebration on Sunday, June 8.

The Willie Green Band was one of the most popular bands in the area during the early 1900s, according to Melissa Patrick, chair of the Bicentennial Committee.

The musical program was researched and is conducted by Joseph Rubin, a specialist in historical music reproduction. It includes a special guest performance by a band member from Millersburg, Jeffery Houston.

The concert will take place at the Timothy Baker Ampitheater in Deer Run Park, Millersburg. Start time is 2 p.m. Take a chair, blanket or cushion. Should there be inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Millersburg Elementary School auditorium.

“We are so thankful to the commissioners for believing in our ideas and our passion for this celebration,” Patrick said. “Our funding came from the bed tax money. We know our kickoff last year brought people into the county and we hope people will come back and support our closing ceremonies.”

The time capsules from various communities around the county will be closed Sunday.

There will be food trucks and visits by prominent politicians.

Two days of celebrating

On Saturday, June 7, 1-4 p.m., exhibits provided by local historical societies and organizations will be on display at the Holmes Center for the Arts, 5200 State Route 39 in Berlin.

The debut of the Holmes County Bicentennial Video, Part 2 – “Looking Forward to the Next 200 years,” produced by Bronson Allison, will be unveiled on Saturday, too.

Also Saturday at the arts center, guests can enjoy a free showing of historical plays written by local students and performed by professional actors in the Black Box Theater.
