‘Hostage to grand US visa process’: Indian on H-1B visa laments about being unable to travel, netizens remain unsympathetic – Trending News
An Indian millionaire working in the US went viral for all the wrong reasons this week after bemoaning the restrictions of his H-1B visa. The anonymous poster claimed to have a net worth of $4.5 million — with both him and his spouse working on H1B visas to earn approximately $700,000 per year. Despite their seemingly rosy financial situation, the post lamented, they were essentially ‘trapped’ by the American visa process.
“So Memorial Day is coming. I’d love to travel. Maybe Paris? Venice? Maybe even home to India…meet mom and dad, go to the temple I love…make some family memories,” the user wrote on the Team Blind website.
The post explained that the couple had been working on H-1B visas since 2014 and their American PR status remained pending with a “200 year wait time” under the EB-2 permanent residency process. According to the US visa bulletin from May 2025, the cut-off date for Indians remains unchanged at January 2013. Put more simply this means there is currently a wait time of more than 12 years for many tech professionals from India.
The post however failed to garner support from others online — with many deeming it a rather ‘entitled’ point of view. Several users also noted that the unnamed individual had chosen to relocate while knowing the visa situation and its limitations.
“Ninety-five percent of citizens will never reach your net worth; I don’t feel sorry for you. An H1B is a temporary visa and you knew the conditions when you relocated,” read one comment.
“With that net worth…why aren’t you planning to quit, move back to India, and enjoy an early retirement?” another wanted to know.
“You’ll always find reasons to b***h about that life isn’t perfect. US itself is a big enough to travel so you can go on a vacation domestically. Yes, H1B has restrictions. You can plan ahead to avoid such situations. That’s the bargain you chose for more money. Or you can keep crying…” summed up a third.
