How Arizona Scientists Helped Further Our Understanding of Earth
Our planet is old, incredibly old. It’s so old, that human history only covers a fraction of the development. As such, we really have no idea what’s happened for most of our planet’s lifespan.

There are a few methods to attempt to piece together the past, and one of the most useful was developed right here in the Grand Canyon State.
What is Dendrochronology?
You may recognize this science from its more commonly referred to name: tree-ring dating. This is the study of those weird rings you’ll see inside tree trunks. These rings mark the different growth seasons trees go through.
At the beginning and end of these seasons, dark rings form around the meaty white center. As such, scientists are able to accurately measure the lifespan of the trees, as well as any environmental factors it may have encountered over its years of growth.

Dendrochronology: A Uniquely Arizona Science
While the study of tree rings has existed for literal centuries, dating back to ancient Greece, it made the leap into the modern age right here in the Grand Canyon State. It all started in Flagstaff, where Andrew Ellicott Douglass and Clark Wissler began to look at tree-rings around the area, and developed a chronology of the entire city dating back 500 years.

After this, in 1937, he went on to found the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona, the first of its kind. As such, Arizona became the center of the Tree-Ring Dating world. Now, there are hundreds of laboratories like this around the world, but they owe everything to two humble Arizona scientists.
