How Did The Made-In-India Nissan Magnite Jump To A 5-Star Global NCAP Rating?
The Nissan Magnite has received a 5-star safety rating for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) from Global NCAP, following a series of crash tests conducted for the South African market. The subcompact SUV had initially failed to meet key safety standards but improved its score significantly after multiple updates.
Global NCAP put the Magnite through three rounds of testing. In the first test, the car, fitted with two airbags and no Electronic Stability Control (ESC), scored just 2 stars for both AOP and Child Occupant Protection (COP). The manufacturer then added ESC and increased the airbag count to six, which pushed the rating to 4 stars in the second test. In the final round, the Magnite secured 32.31 out of 34 points for AOP, earning 5 stars, although the COP score dropped slightly to 33.64 out of 49, resulting in a 3-star rating.
The upgraded model now includes features such as six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, hill-start assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera. According to Global NCAP, the car’s structure remained stable during all tests.
In India, the Magnite is priced between Rs 6.14 lakh and Rs 11.76 lakh (ex-showroom) and competes with other subcompact SUVs like the Renault Kiger and Tata Nexon. The improved safety score may help the model appeal to buyers who are giving more weight to crash test results when choosing a vehicle.
