Whenever you travel on a national highway or expressway, you have to pass through a toll. But do you know how many toll plazas there are in India and how much revenue is generated from these toll plazas in a year? Let us find out.

As fast as the network of roads is expanding in India, toll plazas are also increasing at the same pace and as the number of toll plazas is increasing, the revenue generated from them is also increasing.

How many total plazas are there in India?

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a total of 1,087 toll plazas are operating in the country by June 2025. All these toll plazas are part of the 1.5 lakh km long national highway.

Toll is collected at these toll plazas on about 45,000 kilometres. The number of toll plazas has seen a huge increase in the last few years.

Notably, out of all the toll plazas currently present in the country, 457 toll plazas have been constructed in the last five years.

Now if we talk about the earnings of these toll plazas, then according to the data presented in the Lok Sabha, these 1,087 toll plazas are earning an average of Rs 168.24 crore every day. That is, on an annual basis, this amount reaches about Rs 61,408.15 crore.

Which toll plaza is the most expensive?

As per data released by the Modi government, the toll plaza in Gujarat’s Bharathana village is the most expensive in the country. This toll plaza is built on National Highway 48, which connects the national capital, Delhi, to the financial capital, Mumbai. It is the highest revenue-generating toll plaza in the country. This toll plaza earns approximately Rs 400 crore annually, based on the average of the past five years.
