Both California and Oregon State will look to prove just how short their memories can be as the pair collide against one another in Saturday’s NCAA season-opener. The two schools each endured 2024 schedules they would sooner forget, unified in the sense that both teams started out with plenty of promise, only to wilt as the campaign wore on.
Only one can start 2025 in the win column, however, and the Golden Bears travel to Reser Stadium targeting back-to-back wins in this rivalry for the first time in seven years. California waltzed to a dominant 44-7 rout when these teams faced off in October last year, but it hasn’t managed a victory in Oregon State’s backyard since winning by a similar score in 2018.
The Beavers opened 2024 with a 4-1 record before suffering defeat in six of their last seven games to end any hopes of a meaningful finish in the Pac-12. Trent Bray has nonetheless returned for a second season as head coach and will look to resurrect the same fearlessness that saw his side start 2024 in such strong fashion.
Saturday’s game is a grudge match of sorts, too, after California successfully recruited freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele from under Oregon State’s noses. Bray has spoken highly of the 6’3″ playmaker and “extremely talented kid,” whom he’ll be desperate to shut down as he makes the step up to college ball.
