San Diego FC has wasted no time in making an impact on Major League Soccer and leads the Western Conference as it prepares to resume its campaign with a trip to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. The MLS season was briefly put on hold to allow those teams competing in the Leagues Cup to conduct their business. Mikey Varas’ men were one of the 18 teams hoping to land the title, though they failed to reach the second stage of the competition and return to domestic matters this weekend.
Sporting KC didn’t participate in the League Cup due to their involvement in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this year. That means interim coach Kerry Zavagnin has gone a fortnight without seeing his team in action, hopeful they won’t suffer from any ring rust in their return to the pitch this weekend. The Wizards are currently three games without a win and sit 13th in MLS’ Western Conference, six points off the play-off places as things stand.
At the other end of the table, just one point separates San Diego from the Vancouver Whitecaps in second. A win for Saturday’s guest would be enough to ensure Varas’ side finishes this weekend atop the summit, with San Diego having won its last four league fixtures on the road.
