Hulu Lands Major Action Film Series Days After Disney Merger Announcement

It appears Hulu is ready to go out with a bang, days after a Disney merger announcement confirmed the streaming service will soon be no more. The platform shoots for increased viewership thanks to the beloved action franchise, John Wick, which is set for an imminent debut.

According to Screen Rant, Hulu will house all four John Wick films on its platform, with the movies becoming available to stream via the Disney-owned service on Aug. 15. Hulu is the latest platform to have the entire John Wick movie series under one roof, as Peacock did the same thing this past May.

Housing the Keanu Reeves-led John Wick movies is a much-needed boost for Hulu and its subscribers following the recent news that Disney will shutter the platform after over two decades. Disney plans to integrate Hulu’s content into its platform over the next year. However, Hulu won’t completely disappear with the integration as it will transform into a general entertainment brand once the merger is complete.

The John Wick franchise is one of the most critically acclaimed action series of its time, with Reeves starring as the eponymous assassin who initially retired from being a professional hitman before getting back into the game following the slaying of his dog by Russian gangsters. The franchise nearly didn’t get off the ground as studio executives at Lionsgate pushed back on several key aspects of the original movie, which also earned lukewarm test screenings. However, the tune at Lionsgate changed when the film became a critical and commercial success, making Reeves’ Wick a household name.

John Wick‘s momentum only went up from there, with each of the next three sequels being embraced by critics and audiences. Chapter 4, which sees Wick take on the High Table in his quest for freedom and seemingly chronicles the assassin’s demise, is the apex of the neo-noir action series. Chapter 4 boasts a franchise-record 94% critical rating and 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as grossing a series-best $447.3 million worldwide.

John Wick Is Coming Back for Another Sequel

The Wick saga is far from over, with John Wick 5 in the works at Lionsgate after it officially moved forward at the studio in April. Reeves will return to reprise his role as the sharp-suited protagonist, though he’s reportedly doing so on one condition, while franchise helmer Chad Stahelski will be back to direct. Meanwhile, Laurence Fishburne has hinted at his return as the Bowery King.

Reeves most recently starred in the John Wick spinoff film, Ballerina, alongside lead actor Ana de Armas. As fans await John Wick 5, multiple spinoffs are in the works, including Donnie Yen’s Caine spinoff and an anime project.

Fans can stream all four John Wick movies via Hulu, beginning on Aug. 15.
