Huron Waves Music Festival Invites Discovery Through Music with groundbreaking new works

2025 festival combines natural world, cultural storytelling and music into transformative event for all ages

Make a Discovery Through Music with Huron Waves Music Festival this June.

“We are excited to invite attendees this year to enjoy Discovery Through Music, a week-long celebration that invites audiences of all ages to engage deeply with the natural world, cultural storytelling, and transformative music,” said festival artistic director John Miller.

“From intergenerational hikes and immersive concerts to a groundbreaking theatrical presentation on Inuit identity, our 2025 festival offers a unique blend of education, environment, and expression.”

Harpist Sharlene Wallace and Frank Horvat created Trees.Listen

This year’s festival opens on June 13 with “Listen to the Trees”, a two-part event focussing on the important role trees play in both life and culture. “At 6 p.m. on June 13, we begin the journey with an intergenerational hike along the South Huron Trail, hosted in collaboration with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority,” explained Miller. He added, “This one-hour experience welcomes families and nature lovers to connect through movement and mindfulness and is free to attend.”

Saturday afternoon at the Exeter Curling Club, the listening continues with internationally respected botanist and climate advocate Diana Beresford-Kroeger, who joins Pat Morden of the Lakeshore Eco-Network to discuss the wisdom of the forest and its power to heal the planet.

“Next, let your senses be awakened by Trees.Listen — a musical meditation on nine Ontario trees, performed live by acclaimed harpist Sharlene Wallace and co-composed with Frank Horvat,” enthused Miller. “This rich soundscape fuses Celtic harp, electronic textures, and projected photography to create a soul-stirring sonic journey inspired by Beresford-Kroeger’s visionary work!”

He added, “Huron Waves’ Listen to the Trees is not just a concert; it’s an experience that weaves sound and story, music and message, and invites our audience to reconnect with the forests that breathe life into our world.”

The following weekend, the festival continues with a landmark Indigenous People’s Day event, an incredible new work by beloved Canadian singer-songwriter and cultural ambassador Susan Aglukark, “Anaanagiik” (Mother and Child).

“This moving new work combines music, storytelling, and theatre,” explained Miller. “We are proud to present a preview of this special piece on Friday June 20 at 7 p.m. and then, a performance on June 21 at 3 p.m. at the National Indigenous People’s Day Celebration. Both events will be at Grand Bend Place, Centre for the Living Arts, Grand Bend.”

He added, “Performed in Inuktitut and English, Anaanagiik traces the epic story of the Inuk people through personal and ancestral voices. With contributions from Lucy Qajajuaq-Burke of Nunavut and young actor Cameron Poirier, and underscored by rarely seen archival images from the National Film Board of Canada, this production is both an intimate reflection and a national statement.”

Susan Aglukark shared about the piece, ““This is our story. This is our truth. And now, it is time to share it.”
