Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Indian Oil) to explore the potential of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) in the Indian automotive landscape.

This strategic partnership aims to assess the feasibility and readiness of hydrogen-powered mobility solutions under Indian conditions.

As part of the collaboration, HMIL has handed over its flagship hydrogen-powered vehicle, the Hyundai NEXO, to Indian Oil for real-world trials. Over the course of the next two years, the NEXO FCEV will clock approximately 40,000 km across diverse Indian terrains and driving conditions. The trial will focus on evaluating the vehicle’s long-term durability, operational reliability, and overall performance in India’s dynamic environment.

The project will also undertake a comprehensive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis, encompassing critical factors such as fuel consumption, maintenance expenses, and running costs. These insights are expected to offer a deeper understanding of the economic and environmental viability of deploying hydrogen-based mobility solutions at scale in India.

Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Ltd., expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “As India’s foremost smart mobility solutions provider, it is our firm resolve to innovate with future-ready technology. By signing an MoU with Indian Oil Corporation, a pioneer in India’s energy sector, we aim to combine world-class hydrogen fuel cell technology with Indian expertise. Together, we seek to unlock the potential of green hydrogen as a transformative energy source, making it accessible, affordable, and sustainable. We are confident this collaboration will serve as a critical step in demonstrating the potential of hydrogen as an alternate sustainable fuel source in the times to come.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Alok Sharma, Director (R&D) and Board Member at Indian Oil, said, “As India’s largest public-sector energy entity, we at IndianOil are proud to be catalysts in the Government of India’s vision to attain energy security and reduce fossil fuel imports. We believe hydrogen fuel is a vital component of India’s clean energy roadmap, and fuel cell technology holds immense potential in significantly aiding net carbon neutrality. This collaboration with Hyundai Motor India will enable us to conduct in-depth studies in fuel cell technology and advance efforts towards realising a greener mobility ecosystem.”

This MoU is part of Hyundai Motor India’s broader commitment to hydrogen mobility and sustainable transportation. Globally, Hyundai is one of the few automotive manufacturers with an expansive range of propulsion technologies, including ICE, CNG, flex-fuel, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen.

In India, Hyundai is also working closely with premier institutions to strengthen its hydrogen roadmap. Notably, the company has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) to establish a state-of-the-art ‘Hydrogen Innovation Centre’. The facility is poised to become a hub for research, development, and testing of hydrogen-related technologies. It will support startups, OEMs, and other ecosystem stakeholders by offering advanced infrastructure for prototyping and validation, thereby accelerating innovation in green hydrogen technologies.
