Hyundai Creta completes 10 years: Why is it India’s best-selling SUV? – Car News
Hyundai Creta turns 10 in India and is still the reigning champ of mid-size SUVs with over 1.2 million sold. Why does it rule the roads?
Hyundai Creta turns 10 years old and continues to have a tight hold on the mid-size SUV segment. The Creta is India’s number one SUV, as it successfully beats even the compact SUVs in terms of sales. By selling 1.2 million Creta SUVs ever since its inception in July 2015, Hyundai has been in pole position, vanquishing its competition. Here’s a trivia question: Which was the first model that created the mid-size SUV category? Here’s a hint: it’s not the Creta. Hyundai has swept away this segment, and many have forgotten that it was the Renault Duster in 2012. Coming back to the Creta, we find out why it remains an unstoppable juggernaut.
Hyundai Creta: Multiple Engine Options
Hyundai has always focused on offering all the possible powertrains in the Creta so that the SUV caters to everyone’s requirements and needs. The first-generation Creta was powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and two diesel options — a 1.4-litre and a powerful 1.6-litre.
In 2020, the South Korean manufacturer took a major step with the second-generation Creta, as for the first time the SUV offered a turbo petrol engine along with a new 1.5-litre NA petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel. Both the Creta generations were available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
Recently, Hyundai has been busy updating the Creta, and in 2024, the second-generation SUV received a facelift packed with new features. It was followed up with the introduction of the sporty Creta N Line. This year, for the first time, its all-electric avatar made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
Hyundai Creta: Features
Hyundai has been at the forefront when it comes to car features. The first generation featured a sunroof, an Arkamys music system, steering-mounted controls, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which was later updated with six airbags, a smart keyband, a wireless phone charger, cruise control and projector headlamps. It was also the first in its segment to offer connected car tech.
The second generation is packed with multiple traction control, drive modes, a Bose sound system, front ventilated seats, an electric parking brake, all LED lights, dual-zone temperature control and a lot more.
Hyundai Creta: Safety
The Creta may not have received a 5-star Bharat or Global NCAP in terms of safety. The first-generation SUV top model came equipped with 6 airbags, hill assist control, rear parking sensors with a camera and traction control. The second-generation SUV comes standard with six airbags and is equipped with functions like a blind spot monitor, a tyre pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera, front parking sensors and Level 2 ADAS with over 10 features.
