Hyundai down to fourth spot in April sales; hit by M&M, Tata Motors
For the first time since its inception in 1996, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) has been pushed to number four in monthly sales. The winner this month is Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), with its new launches like the Thar Roxx and electric vehicles (EVs) – BE 6 and XEV 9e. M&M is the second-highest selling car maker in India in April after Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) and followed by Tata Motors and HMIL at the fourth slot.
HMIL has always been ranked number two in the Indian passenger vehicles (PVs) market, except on a few occasions since last year when Tata Motors sold better numbers in a couple of months last year and M&M in February 2025.
Utility vehicles manufacturer M&M recorded a growth of 28 per cent year on year in its domestic wholesales (dispatches to dealers) to 52,330 units in April as compared with 41,008 in April 2024.
However, HMIL reported domestic wholesales of 44,374 units in April (50,201 units), down 11.6 per cent.
Similarly, Tata Motors has reported a decline of 6 per cent in its domestic sales to 45,199 units in April (47,883 units).
Poor sentiment in the market and lesser new launches have led to a decline in sales for both these companies.
“While the domestic market continues to face headwinds on account of various macro-economic factors, we continue to champion ‘Make in India, Made for the World’ emphasising HMIL’s strong focus on exports. This has resulted in a robust 21.5 per cent y-o-y growth in export volumes in April 2025,” Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, HMIL, said.
On an upward trajectory
The country’s largest PV maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL), meanwhile, managed to grow marginally by selling 1,38,704 units in the domestic market in April (1,37,952 units).
‘Syros’ maker, Kia India, also continued its upward sales trajectory in April with its new launches, dispatching 23,623 units in the domestic market last month (19,968 units), registering a growth of 18.3 per cent.
“This performance reaffirms the growing trust our customers place in Kia’s product excellence and brand promise. As we look ahead, our unwavering focus remains on delivering progressive, customer-centric mobility solutions that resonate with evolving aspirations,” Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice-President and Head of Sales and Marketing, Kia India, said.
Kia India is all set to unveil its new offering, ‘Clavis,’ on May 8, he added.
Subsidiary of the world’s largest car maker, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) also reported y-o-y growth of 21 per cent April to 24,833 units in its domestic sales (20,494 units).
JSW MG Motor India also reported y-o-y growth of 23 per cent in its monthly sales of 5,829 units (4,725 units).
2W segment
In the two-wheeler segment, TVS Motor Company, Royal Enfield and Suzuki Motorcycle India reported growth in April on yearly basis.
