Hyundai evaluating launch of Genesis luxury cars in India – Car News

Hyundai has spoken up for the first time about the introduction of luxury cars in India under the Genesis brand.

Hyundai has pondered on the prospect of launching its luxury range of cars under the Genesis brand for a long time. However, there has been no official update from the South Korean carmaker until now. Hyundai now has officially confirmed that it is evaluating the introduction of Genesis in India.

This comes after the second largest car manufacturer in India announced earlier in May this year that it will launch 26 new models in the country by the end of this decade. The luxury car market in India has seen a boom and Hyundai expects to disrupt the market with its Genesis models.

Genesis in India

In its latest annual report, Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director & Chief Operating Officer, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), said, “HMIL is strategically evaluating the introduction of Genesis, Hyundai’s global luxury marque, to redefine luxury through innovation, design and differentiated experiences. This aligns with our aspiration to serve the evolving expectations of discerning Indian consumers.”

Genesis GV80 patent

As of now, Hyundai hasn’t laid out its plans for the introduction of Genesis but it’s the first time the company has officially spoken on this subject. Last year, Hyundai filed patents for Genesis models in India — GV80 and GV80 coupe. While the choice of a coupe SUV is debatable, the fact that regular GV80 was spotted testing in India makes the former a strong contender for the Indian market.

Given the affinity for SUVs in India, the GV80 could be a good choice for the first Genesis in the country. It is a certainty that when launched, the Genesis models will come to India as a fully-imported Completely Built Unit (CBU), at least initially. However, it is a little too soon to presume anything right now. More concrete details are awaited in the coming months.

The Genesis GV80 and GV80 Coupe are available with three engine options: a 2.5L TGDi petrol engine producing 300 bhp, a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 generating 375 bhp, and a supercharged 3.5L V6 delivering 410 bhp. An all-wheel-drive system with an electronic limited-slip differential is also offered, enhancing off-road performance. Complementing this are advanced suspension systems and responsive steering, ensuring a dynamic and engaging driving experience.
