‘I really want the Brits to study in India,’ says Prof Charlie Jeffery – Education News
At last week’s World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, the UK’s University of York announced it is opening a campus in Mumbai. FE’s Vikram Chaudhary talked to York’s vice-chancellor Prof Charlie Jeffery on the next steps. Excerpts:
Is the Mumbai campus your first outside of York?
Yes, this will be the first one that is set up from scratch. We have another transnational campus in Greece, but that one we inherited from another organisation.
Why did you choose Mumbai, and not the GIFT City in Gujarat (chosen by many foreign universities)?
There were four reasons:
First, we were really impressed by the pace of development of public transport infrastructure, in particular metro system and the second airport.
Second, York Mumbai will be a research-intensive university, and we felt that Mumbai, and broadly Maharashtra, are the right choice for that – York has brilliant capabilities in agritech and biotechnology, and there are opportunities for research in such areas in Maharashtra, in increasing agricultural productivity and decarbonising agriculture. York also has world-leading capabilities in the interface between the creative arts and technology, and Mumbai is an important city in that context.
Third, Mumbai is a really dynamic city.
Fourth, we found the Maharashtra government to be extremely welcoming.
When will the student intake take place? What will be the batch size, and which all courses will be initially offered?
We intend to recruit our first cohort of 200 students, perhaps a bit more than 200, in September 2026. So, in a little less than a year-and-a-half, and we anticipate a start a set of programmes in business and computer science, as well as creative industries, and later biotechnology.
Will you have your own building?
Our plans are to rent, and in due course, if all goes well, we may build from scratch. We are fascinated by the area around Powai.
To begin with, will there be faculty from York?
It will be both from India and York, and over time it will be predominantly locally-hired faculty. We don’t envisage flying faculty.
Will there be student mobility between York and Mumbai campuses?
Yes, and I am actually really, really interested in York students taking the opportunity to do part of their study in India, and I also mentioned our work in Greece, and I think there could be a nice triangle of opportunities. But I really want the Brits to come to India.
Will it be called University of York Mumbai campus?
It will be called University of York, Mumbai.
And what about the fee structure?
It will be in accordance with the UGC rules and in competitive relationship with the market in India. It definitely won’t be UK-level fees.
