Lending major ICICI Bank will manage the online payment services for the country’s first barrier-less toll collection system, sources told businessline.
Accordingly, the bank’s role will be to process all digital transactions at Choryasi Toll Plaza, which sits on the 246-kilometre Bharuch–Surat stretch of National Highway 48 in Gujarat.
The lender bagged the mandate from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Notably, the development is a part of NHAI’s push to modernise road infrastructure by introducing global standards.
Sources told businessline that Choryasi will be the first NH stretch to support the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system.
The MLFF system eliminates traditional toll booths in favour of seamless, contactless payments.
RFID and AI tech to replace toll booths
According to specifications, the system integrates RFID scanners with AI-driven automatic number plate recognition cameras, ensuring that toll amounts are collected without slowing traffic.
Only banks are eligible to bid for these projects, in line with metro fare collection models.
The initiative, part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower fuel consumption, and shorten travel times.
Pilots planned for other major highways
Apart from Choryasi, pilot bids have been invited for toll plazas at Gharaunda, Nemli, UER-II (Urban Extension Road-II), Dwarka Expressway, and three locations on the Gurugram-Jaipur section of NH-48.
Sources indicate that the automated system is expected to enhance transparency, ensure compliance, and reduce operational costs, particularly for logistics operators.
Speaking to businessline, sectoral experts said that the shift to open road tolling will significantly improve the commuter experience and support the government’s aim of enhancing national logistics efficiency.
