UNRWA: ICJ advisory opinion reveals violations restricting humanitarian aid access to Gaza
New York – Saba:
Tamara Al-Rifai, Director of External Relations and Communications at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said: “Although the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion is not binding, it reveals significant violations of international law and the impact of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza.”
In a post on X today, monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), she added: “The ICJ opinion is clear: the State of Israel must facilitate UNRWA’s humanitarian operations in Gaza and across the entire occupied Palestinian territory.” She emphasized that UNRWA must be allowed to deliver life-saving assistance.
She continued: “The ICJ opinion did not uphold any of Israel’s allegations against UNRWA and its staff. Therefore, the opinion is clear—it represents the view of the highest legal authority within the United Nations.”
Al-Rifai stressed that the pressure to ensure sufficient humanitarian supplies, including food and medicine, reach Gaza is as important as the international community’s efforts to implement the ICJ’s opinion.
She concluded: “The declaration of famine in Gaza at the end of August speaks volumes about the impact of these measures, particularly those targeting UNRWA by the Israeli government, on civilians in Gaza.”
