IIM Nagpur Leads by Example with Bold Sustainability Initiatives on World Environment Day

Sustainable Investing News

Nagpur, June 6, 2025 — In celebration of World Environment Day, the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM Nagpur) reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with a series of impactful campus-wide green initiatives. The Institute is emerging as a national leader in sustainable development among India’s educational institutions.

“Sustainability at IIM Nagpur is more than a topic in the curriculum—it’s a way of life,” said Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director of IIM Nagpur. “We are demonstrating how campuses can operate responsibly while educating future leaders to do the same.”

At the heart of the Institute’s sustainability drive is its ambition to become a net-zero emissions campus. A major step toward this goal is a 2-megawatt solar power project currently underway, designed to meet the Institute’s entire energy needs. This initiative not only reduces emissions but also provides students with direct exposure to renewable energy infrastructure in action.

Water management is another key priority. IIM Nagpur has implemented an advanced rainwater harvesting system across campus to recharge groundwater reserves. All wastewater is treated and reused for landscaping through a closed-loop system that ensures zero environmental discharge.

Architectural design on campus supports passive cooling and natural lighting, helping minimize reliance on air conditioning and artificial lighting. Buildings are constructed with energy-efficient materials to reduce power usage year-round.

The Institute has also taken steps to phase out plastic across its facilities. Single-use plastic water bottles have been replaced by reusable glass bottles in classrooms, offices, and meeting spaces. This effort has quickly become a visible symbol of the school’s commitment to environmentally responsible choices and has inspired students to adopt sustainable habits off campus as well.

To mark World Environment Day, faculty and staff participated in a tree-planting drive, furthering IIM Nagpur’s ongoing green landscaping campaign, which focuses on using native, drought-resistant plant species to promote local biodiversity and reduce water usage.

In a new development, IIM Nagpur has partnered with HP Enterprise to enhance sustainability monitoring across its operations. This collaboration aims to integrate data-driven insights into resource management and ensure continuous progress toward environmental goals.

Sustainability is deeply embedded into IIM Nagpur’s academic and operational ethos. Through regular plantation drives, infrastructure upgrades, and behavioral nudges, the campus is fostering a culture of environmental responsibility that reflects the values of the next generation of business leaders.

As it moves toward its goal of net-zero emissions, IIM Nagpur stands as a model for other academic institutions looking to merge education with environmental action—showing that building a greener future begins at home.
