Increase in child pregnancy, “we have lost control” – Assistant Minister

EIGHT children under the age of 15 became mothers in the first six months of this year.

This, according to statistics provided by the Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa.

He said 481 girls between the ages of 15 and 19 had also given birth during this same period.

Mr Ravunawa said several underlying social issues were driving children to become sexually active at an increasingly younger age.

“They become sexually active at a tender age due to several factors, like the influence of social media, accessibility to pornography, loss of family time and values, and peer pressure,” he said.

Reflecting on generational changes, Mr Ravunawa said the Fiji of today was vastly different from the Fiji he grew up in.

“In my young days, there were no mobile devices. We learned from our teachers, our parents, and our community leaders. We valued each other as persons, our faith, race, and culture.

“It is so sad. The influence of globalisation and cyberspace freedom has dramatically changed our beloved Fiji.”

He warned that families were losing touch with their children because of technology, and the lack of parental monitoring had allowed outside influences to shape the minds and behaviours of young people.

“We can’t even know what our children are watching and who they are talking to inside their rooms. We have opened ourselves to many influences, and in the process, we have lost control.”

He urged parents and community leaders to take stronger roles in guiding young people and reviving traditional values that once held families and communities together.
