India confirms bid for 2030 commonwealth games, pushes for 2036 Olympics

India has confirmed plans to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, positioning the move as part of its long-term goal to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha said preparations are underway, with New Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and Ahmedabad—which boasts the world’s largest cricket stadium—under consideration as host cities.

India, which last hosted the Games in 2010, has until the end of August to submit its formal bid. The winning host will be announced in November in Glasgow.

The IOA has promised a full-scale Games, featuring events where India excels, including traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho, which it hopes to promote for Olympic inclusion.

The bid comes at a time when the Commonwealth Games Federation is still recovering from the 2026 hosting crisis, after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to cost concerns, prompting Glasgow to take over a reduced version of the event.
