India Emerges as Global Healthcare Magnet150% Surge in NRI Patients in FY25

  • 150% Year-on-Year Growth in NRI healthcare customers in FY25, driven by affordability and quality care.

  • Heart surgery in India costs up to 90% less than in the US.

  • 148% increase in customers under 35; 125% surge in women NRI patients.

India is seeing a steep increase in Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) visiting the country for quality and value-for-money healthcare, as found in an updated report by Policybazaar.

The figures reflect an impressive 150% year-over-year increase in NRI customers in FY 2024–25 over FY 2023–24 emphasizing India’s increasing significance as a world center for medical tourism.

One of the major drivers of this trend is India’s unbeatable cost advantage. For instance, heart bypass surgery in India can cost between $5,000–$8,000, while the same procedure in the United States costs between $70,000–$150,000. A knee replacement procedure can cost between $4,000–$6,000 in India, as opposed to $30,000–$50,000 in the US. Liver transplants also reflect similar disparity $25,000–$35,000 in India compared to $300,000–$500,000 overseas.

NRI patients opting for elective procedures usually file claims between $2,000 and $15,000, while more complex surgeries can go up to $40,000 still significantly lower than in Western countries.

Low health insurance rates are another major draw factor for India. The cost per individual for an annual premium is between $120 and $300, a huge difference compared with $8,000+ in the US and $4,000–$5,000 in GCC nations. This has created a high online interest amongst NRIs considering Indian insurance plans for themselves and their families.

The report also identifies 125% growth in women NRI customers and 148% growth in NRI clients below the age of 35, which shows increased confidence in India’s healthcare system among female and young NRIs.

Although South Indian cities remain the leaders in NRI treatment choices, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, and Thane are fast catching up owing to their growing medical infrastructure and accessibility.

With an irresistible combination of top-notch care, state-of-the-art facilities, and staggering cost-cutting, India is quickly becoming the destination of choice for NRIs looking to get high-quality healthcare without the steep price.
