India Emerging as a Global Leader in Medical Technology |
Representational Image
India is rapidly emerging as a global hub for medical technology, driven by innovation, strong policy support, and rising domestic demand, according to Amit Agrawal, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, who mentioned this at the 17th CII Global MedTech Summit in New Delhi. The summit, themed ‘Innovating for a Healthier Future – Advancing MedTech for Global Impact: Make in India, Make for the World’, brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to shape the future of healthcare technology.
MedTech Growth
Post-COVID Breakthroughs
He underscored India’s significant progress in manufacturing advanced medical equipment since the pandemic. The country now produces MRI and CT scan machines, mammography units, ventilators, stents, heart valves, dialysis machines, and various implants—products that were once considered impossible to make locally. “Products that seemed out of reach a decade ago are now being manufactured in India, proving the strength of our innovation ecosystem,” he noted.
Policy Push
Several policy initiatives are shaping the sector’s future:
*Three new medical device parks set to become operational within a year
*Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Medical Devices
*Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech (PRIP) Scheme, with an allocation of ₹5,000 crore
These measures aim to boost cost competitiveness, deepen domestic value chains, and accelerate R&D-driven innovation.
India as a Global Leader
As reported by knnindia.co.in, Agrawal stated that nations worldwide now view India not just as a market but as a leader in MedTech innovation. He urged closer collaboration between industry and government to fast-track the commercialization of new ideas and technologies.
With economic reforms and new trade agreements, India’s MedTech sector is poised to:
*Generate millions of jobs
*Strengthen export competitiveness
*Ensure access to affordable, high-quality healthcare globally
