India independence celebrated in Maple Ridge

Celebrations included the hoisting of the flag, the singing of the national anthem, and cultural performances

India’s Independence Day was celebrated by a small group of patriotic people in Maple Ridge.

About 16 people commemorated the 79th annual event at Pioneer Park on 230 Street, just north of 118 Avenue, on Saturday, Aug. 16.

There was a flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural performances, and community events, said Kamlesh Maheshwari, co-director of AnuKaran, and organizer of the event.

“The celebration reflected the spirit of patriotism, unity, and cultural pride among the Indian community here in Canada,” noted Maheshwari, despite the morning rain, which, she said, could not dampen their spirits.

“Today we stood together, celebrating not just India’s independence, but also the pride of our roots and the values of unity we carry wherever we go.”

Attendees sang India’s national anthem, followed by speeches highlighting India’s rich heritage and the values of freedom, unity, and diversity.

“Let’s keep our heads held high and our hearts open for all,” was the main message of the event said Maheshwari.

India’s official national holiday is Aug. 15, which commemorates the nation’s independence from British rule, which began in 1858.

On July 18, 1947, the Indian Independence Act was passed by Britain establishing an independent India and Pakistan, as dominions under British Commonwealth.

The act came into effect on Aug. 15, that same year, and the two countries would remain dominions under Britain until their constitutions came into effect in 1950 for India, and 1956 for Pakistan.

“It is a day marked by the hoisting of the tricolour, patriotic melodies, and a deep sense of unity—reminding us of the sacrifices that paved the way for our freedom,” said Maheshwari, noting the celebration concluded with a sense of joy and solidarity.

“Reminding everyone present that independence is not only a gift to cherish but also a legacy to honour and pass on to future generations.”
