India inks agreement with Russia for T-72 tank engines
(MENAFN) New Delhi has signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport to procure 1,000-horsepower engines for its T-72 tanks, strengthening India’s armored capabilities. The agreement also includes a technology transfer component, aligning with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative to boost domestic defense manufacturing.
The T-72 tanks, a crucial part of India’s armored fleet, are currently powered by 780 HP engines. Upgrading to 1,000 HP engines will enhance mobility and combat effectiveness, according to the Indian Defense Ministry. The technology transfer will facilitate local assembly by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited in Avadi, Chennai.
The deal underscores India’s deep-rooted defense ties with Russia, with Rosoboronexport securing $50 billion in Indian contracts since 2005. Russia has supplied $80 billion worth of military hardware to India over two decades, making it a key defense partner.
At India’s premier aerospace exhibition in February, Rosoboronexport CEO Aleksandr Mikheev described India as Russia’s top strategic partner in the Asia-Pacific. Russia showcased over 500 defense products, including the Su-57 fighter jet, drawing major interest.
India remains one of the world’s largest arms importers, with Russia providing advanced platforms such as the Su-30MKI fighter jets and BrahMos missiles. Around 60% of India’s military equipment is of Russian origin, and both nations are committed to expanding defense cooperation.
Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Moscow for high-level consultations. He met with Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Aleksey Gruzdev, and other senior officials to discuss bilateral relations and global strategic issues.
