India Post launches two new digital platforms to modernise address system
India Post has introduced two new digital platforms — Know Your DIGIPIN and Know Your PIN Code — to improve accuracy in address mapping and modernize India’s postal infrastructure.
DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is a new geo-coded system that divides the entire country into grids of about 4 meters by 4 meters. Each grid is assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code based on precise latitude and longitude.
This system helps locate any place in India with high accuracy.
The DIGIPIN system was developed with the help of IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC. It aims to make postal deliveries, logistics, and service access smoother — especially in remote and rural areas where addresses can be ambiguous or unclear.
Users can find their DIGIPIN through the Know Your DIGIPIN portal by entering location details or using GPS coordinates.
The platform is open-source, encouraging developers and organizations to use and integrate the system widely.
Meanwhile, the traditional six-digit PIN Code system, in use since 1972, has been updated through a large-scale geofencing exercise. India Post has digitally mapped the boundaries of over 1.5 lakh PIN Codes across the country.
With the new Know Your PIN Code portal, users can identify their exact PIN Code based on their geographic location. The portal also allows feedback from users to improve the accuracy of these boundaries. The geo-fenced PIN Code dataset is publicly available on the Open Government Data Platform.
These tools support the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and aim to enhance service delivery across sectors by providing precise and reliable address data.
